Airtel Zambia to have rolled out 200 rural cell sites by end-2012

Airtel Zambia is reportedly aiming to have deployed some 200 new mobile towers in rural areas of the country before the end of the year, with a view to enhancing coverage in underserved areas. According to AllAfrica, Airtel managing director Fayaz King noted that the infrastructure rollout forms part of a partnership with Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA), with the duo working on a universal access project that will see Airtel Zambia construct more than 350 shareable base stations in rural areas nationwide

PCCW chooses IBM for SaaS cloud apps

PCCW Solutions, the integrated ICT services unit of Hong Kong-based telco PCCW, has selected IBM PureSystems as the basis for its new Enterprise Solutions Superstore, an online environment for independent software vendors (ISVs) to offer cloud-based applications using a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. As reported by TelecomAsia, IBM PureFlex will be utilised by PCCW to serve enterprise customers with cloud services tailored to their needs, and according to PCCW, the solution met its need for ‘a fully integrated and optimised infrastructure that radically simplifies computing to ensure high quality services and an enhanced customer experience.’ With the implementation of the IBM offering, PCCW Solutions intends to tap the growing public cloud services market in Hong Kong, which researchers claim is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 40%.

CTM unveils first commercial cloud services with Cisco

Macau’s incumbent fixed line telco Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau (CTM) has unveiled its first commercial cloud-based products in cooperation with Cisco. CTM’s Cloud Infrastructure Service is aimed at enabling companies to expand their IT storage requirements quickly, and the Business Information Service is a VoIP product which allows calls to be made and received on multiple devices like smartphones, laptops and tablet computers. CTM, backed by UK-owned Cable & Wireless Communications, said in March that it was preparing for a ‘new era of cloud computing’, CommsUpdate reported.

Following on from America Movil’s (AM’s) announcement last week that it had agreed terms to buy a 21% stake in the Telekom Austria Group from Viennese businessman Ronny Pecik and his Egyptian partner, Naguib Sawiris, the Austrian firm has taken steps to clarify the precise shareholdings involved in the transaction, putting an end to increasingly frenzied media speculation. According to Telekom, as at 15 June 2012 the pan-Latin American telecoms giant held 6.75% of the total shares of Telekom Austria, thus exceeding the 5% threshold for the announcement of the holding of stocks, as per the Austrian Stock Exchange Act
