Chile's 4G auction to begin next week

Chile’s telecoms regulator, the Sub-Secretaria de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) has announced plans to launch a tender for the provision of 4G services next week, with frequencies to be awarded in the first quarter of 2012, reports Diario Financiero. Subtel’s head Jorge Atton, claimed that with the upcoming contest, the watchdog would begin moving telecommunications in Chile towards a new structural model. Atton described the broad plan for the sector as being divided into ‘two layers’, the first of which will encompass infrastructure, whilst the second will involve service providers, effectively working as ‘virtual operators’
