Committee to investigate armed forces deal

A committee has been formed to investigate whether or not an agreement between France Telecom subsidiary Jordan Telecom Group, which operates under its parent’s Orange brand, and the Jordan Armed Forces presents a threat to competition in the telecommunications sector. According to the Jordan Times, citing an unnamed source, the committee will examine the impact of the deal, which offers members of the armed forces special rates on mobile and internet services, on revenues to the treasury. Fearing that the arrangement will have a negative impact on competition and fairness, critics of the deal have questioned why the agreement was only signed with Orange and none of the nation’s other telcos.
