The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has allocated USD24 million from the Universal Services Fund (USF) to construct 43 new mobile base transceiver stations (BTS) in under-serviced areas throughout the country, AllAfrica reports. USF projects are funded by all licensed telecoms operators contributing 2% of annual revenue, and POTRAZ has collected USD41.3 million since the country adopted multiple foreign currencies in 2009. Director-general of the regulator Charles Sibanda said the latest USF programme was at the tendering stage, as no cellco(s) had been chosen yet to receive the funding to carry out the network expansion work.
