SIGET deactivates 113,000 unregistered mobile lines

El Salvador’s telecoms and electricity regulator, Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecom (SIGET), cut off around 113,000 unregistered mobile lines in January this year, reports La Prensa Grafica. SIGET said the implementation of SIM registration will help to improve national security by curbing crime committed using cell phones. With around 8.49 million mobile subscribers at the end of 31 March 2012, TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that El Salvador boasts one of the highest wireless penetration rates in Latin America and the Caribbean, standing at approximately 144% of the population at the same date, well ahead of the regional average of around 118%.
