South African-based cellco MTN Uganda has agreed to pay UGX19 billion (USD7.65 million) to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for unpaid taxes incurred between 2003 and 2007. The UGX19 billion is for unpaid ‘Pay As You Earn’ tax from bonuses, though the URA claims that MTN owes far more. According to the Daily Monitor, the URA is looking for a total of UGX136 billion, which includes unpaid taxes on branding and on the income of expatriates.
